Welcome to Year 2!

This Summer term we have lots of exciting new learning happening.

In English we will be looking at a wonderful story called The King Who Banned The Dark by Emily Haworth-Booth. This gorgeous picture book teaches us that we need the dark in order to enjoy the light.  

In Summer 2 we will be looking at the story of Rosie Revere a witty picture book about pursuing your passion. Rosie may seem quiet during the day, but at night she's a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer.

In maths we will be learning all about Statistics which involves learning about tally charts, pictograms, block graphs and how to interpret them. In our shape lessons we will be learning all about 2D and 3D shapes as well as their properties. In direction and position we will learn how to order and arrange objects in patterns and sequences, describing their position in relation to each other. They will also continue to build on their knowledge of the language of position, direction and movement that they learnt in year 1.

We will also still be focusing on our 2,5 and 10 times tables so don't forget to keep practising using:

Our topic for History this term is Our Local Heroes. We will be learning about Florence Nightingale the founder of modern nursing and Mary Seacole who overcame racism and predjudice to work as a nurse in the Crimean War.

In  Science we will be learning all about plants, we will learn about the life cycle of a plant, what the main parts of plants and tress are, how to plant a seed and a bulb, what plants need to grow well, how to measure and record the growth of plants and much more!

In RE we will be learning all about Jesus as a story teller. We will be hearing lots of different parables and learning the different morals of the stories and how they make us better christians.

In SCARF we will be looking at Being My Best learning all about how to look after our bodies, how we get energy, how to stay healthy and also how to have a positive growth mindset by setting goals and what to do when things get difficult. 

In Summer 2 we will be looking at Growing and Changing. This involves looking at life cycles, dealing with loss and how we can be supportive. 

SCARF

 

For our DT sessions we will be looking at mechanisms and we will be desigining and building our own Ferris Wheel. 

In Art we will be looking at sculpture and 3D Clay houses we will be creating a clay house tile that has recognisable features made by both impressing objects into the surface and by joining simple shapes.

In Geography we will be learning all about where our food comes from and the journeys they take.

We will also be look ing at our wonderful world by lookinga the seven wonders of the world.

This year is a very important year, as all the children will be completing their SATs during the month of May.  Please ensure your child has excellent attendance and support them to complete any home learning set.

Please  listen to your child read at home each evening, then we will all become amazing independent readers!

Make sure you log on to our reading app Go Read to record your child's amazing reading, this also helps us to keep track of your child's daily reading.

PE                                                       

Please ensure your child wears PE kit to school.  They need a red school PE t-shirt, black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, grey school PE hoodie and black pumps/trainers.  PE will be on a Tuesday .

They also need a pair of wellies / old shoes and trousers that they can get muddy when we go in our woodland area for outdoor learning. This term our outdoor learning day is on Friday.
